The short answer (South East)

An EV home doing 8,000 miles a year: £1,167 a year on Intelligent Go, £1,279 on Agile and £1,751 on Flexible.
Add 4 kWp of solar and a 13.5 kWh battery and Intelligent Go drops to £295 (or −£16 if the battery also sells at the evening peak), against £564 on Agile.

How the two tariffs work

Intelligent Octopus Go gives you a cheap rate of 6.6p from 11:30pm to 5:30am, and a day rate of about 29.0p in the South East. Octopus schedules your car's charging, and the whole house gets the cheap rate during those hours.

Agile Octopus changes price every half hour, following the wholesale market. Over the past year in the South East it averaged about 22.0p: around 17.8p overnight and 37.2p between 4pm and 7pm. Prices are lower in summer (20.9p average in June) than in winter (23.7p in January), and on windy or sunny days they can drop below zero.

When Agile makes sense

Agile is the better pick when you don't have an EV (so Intelligent Go isn't available): a typical South East home came out at £954 on Agile against £1,102 on Flexible. It also suits people who enjoy shifting their use to the cheapest half hours and can live with the odd expensive winter evening.

When Intelligent Go makes sense

If you charge an EV at home, Intelligent Go's 6.6p night rate is very hard to beat. A home battery makes it better still, because you can fill it overnight and run the house from it through the dear day rate.

Questions people ask

Can I get Intelligent Octopus Go without an electric car?

No. Intelligent Octopus Go needs a compatible electric car or charger that Octopus can control. Without one, Agile or Flexible are the usual choices, and in our numbers Agile came out cheaper than Flexible for a typical home.

Why is Agile cheaper on average but still loses to Intelligent Go?

Agile's average price in the South East over the last year was about 22.0p, and the overnight hours averaged about 17.8p. Intelligent Go's overnight rate is 6.6p. Charging a car every night is where most of the energy goes, so the cheaper night wins.

Is Agile risky?

It can be. Agile follows the wholesale market every half hour. Over the last year the 4–7pm slot averaged about 37.2p in the South East, and in January it averaged 40.0p. A battery or careful timing takes most of the sting out.

Can I sell battery power back on Intelligent Go?

Our figures show results with and without selling at the evening peak. Check Octopus's current rules on which export tariffs pair with your import tariff before relying on it.

How we worked these out

We run a typical home through a year, half hour by half hour, on each tariff using Octopus's published prices for the region. The example home uses 3,100 kWh a year before any EV or heat pump; the EV does 8,000 miles at 3.5 miles per kWh and charges in the cheapest slots; solar is 4 kWp (about 3,600 kWh a year); the battery holds 13.5 kWh and charges or discharges at up to 5 kW. Agile uses the average price for each half hour of each month from October 2025 to September 2026, so a cold, still winter can cost more. Each tariff is paired with whichever export tariff pays more. Figures are electricity only, including the standing charge, and negative numbers mean Octopus pays you.
